WIDE AREA NETWORKS (WAN) was originated to solve the problem of connecting a LAN to a distant workstation or another remote LAN when distances exceed cable media specifications or when physical cable connections are not posssible. You can used the following transmission media to implement WAN: 1)Plain old telephone system (POTS) 2)High-speed, high bandwidth dedicated leased circuits 3)High-speed fiber optic cable 4)Microwave transmission links 5)Satellite links 6)Wireless radiated media (radio frequencies) Data can be sent(route) uses the following techniques: 1)Circuit Switching connects the sender and receiver by a single physical path for the duration of the conversation. Before any two pc's can transfer data, a dedicated circuit must be established between the two. The sending pc requests a connection to the destination, after which the destination machines signals that it is ready to accept data. The data is sent until it finishs and the receiving pc sent an acknowledgement back to the source pc, and disconnected the connection; making it free for other device to used. the benefit is that its provide a guarranteed data rate,no channel access delay. The drawback is that connection is alway dedicated even when it is idle, no other device can use the channel, required more bandwidth which mean costing more. In addition, it subject to long connection delays; it may take several seconds to establish the connection. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
